Rorikstead Farmer's Sling Pattern

Downloadable PDF

This pattern was designed exclusively for using up the leftover yarn from the Rika's College Tote Bag pattern I designed this year. I love patterns and projects that call for leftovers because not only is that within my budget, it is so much more fun to be creative with leftovers!

When I'm crafting things, I like to be as efficient as possible. And when I use up all the materials I've set aside for a certain project, it feels like such a satisfying accomplishment. In my opinion, creating something useful and functional out of a bunch of unorganized (often random) bits and pieces is one of the most appealing concepts there is. Not to mention, it's earth-friendly! :)

MATERIALS:
-leftover yarn from Rika's College Tote Bag project (Lily Sugar 'n Cream “Soft Ecru,” “Warm Brown,” “Jute” and Lily Sugar 'n Cream Denim “Indigo”)
-size G crochet hook
-yarn needle

INSTRUCTIONS:

Rorikstead Granny Square:

(Make 10)

Tip: For the start of some rounds, you may want to use a “ch3” as the first dc, and a “ch2” as the first hdc. The “ch3” counts as the first dc of the round, and the “ch2” counts as the first hdc of the round. I tried to write up this pattern as simply as I possibly could, but I find it kind of hard to write up granny square patterns. (I tried making a chart, but apparently I need to work on my chart-making skills.)

Make ring: Ch6, sl st in first ch to form ring.
Round 1: Ch3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 2dc into ring, *(ch2, 5dc into ring), repeat from * 3 times, ch2, 2dc into ring, sl st in first dc (remember, the ch3 is the first dc).
Round 2: Attach next color in any corner space and work *(sc, ch2, sc) in corner space, (ch1, skip next st, sc, ch1, skip next st, sc, ch1), repeat from * around. Sl st in first sc.
Round 3: Attach next color in any corner space and work *(2dc, ch2, 2dc) in corner space, (hdc in next sc st, dc into the next dc the round below current round), repeat from * around. Sl st in first dc.
Round 4: Attach next color in any corner space and work *(hdc, ch2, hdc, ch1) in corner sp, (hdc in each of next 3sts, ch1)3times. Sl st in first hdc.
Round 5: Attach next color in any corner space and work *(sc, ch2, sc, ch1) in corner sp, (sc in next ch space, ch3)3times, sc in next ch space, ch1, repeat from * around. Sl st in first sc.
Round 6: Attach next color in any corner space and work *(dc, ch2, dc) in corner sp, hdc in next sc, dc into the next dc 2 rounds below current round, (hdc in next sc, dc into each of the next 3 dc 2 the round below current round)3times, hdc in next sc, dc into the next dc the round below current round, hdc in next sc, repeat from * around. Sl st in first dc.
Round 7: Attach next color in any corner space and work *(sc, ch1, sc) in corner sp, sc in each of next 19 sc, repeat from * around. Sl st in first sc.
Fasten off.

Strap:

Note: At this point, I was left with mostly just the color “Indigo” still leftover, so I made the strap entirely with that color.

Ch6, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch. Ch1, turn.
*Sc in each sc, ch1, turn.
Repeat from * until strap reaches desired length plus about 2 inches, give or take, for sewing to the sides of the bag.

Pocket (OPTIONAL):

Make another Rorikstead Granny Square.

ASSEMBLY:

Arrange the 10 Rorikstead granny squares into a 2x5 strip and sew them together.
Fold the 2x5 piece in half with wrong sides facing and sew up the sides.
Optional: If you still have some leftover yarn, you can sc a round or two around the top of the bag.
Securely sew the strap to the sides of the bag.
Optional: Decide what side you want as the front of the bag and sew 3 sides of the 11th Rorikstead granny square onto that side so that it can function as a pocket. (Or sew the pocket on the inside of the bag, if you'd prefer to make it an interior pocket.)

This pattern is part of a 2-pattern set, which uses the same materials for both patterns.

ASSEMBLY:

I highly recommend searching Google images for tatty teddy photos and illustrations before you begin to sew together the parts.

Sew the head to the body.

Stuff and sew the muzzle to the lower portion of the head. I recommend sewing the muzzle on almost entirely, then adding the stuffing (so the stuffing isn't in the way when you are sewing).

Sew the ears to the head.

Use black yarn to embroider the eyes. The eyes are embroidered quite close together, just above the muzzle.

Sew head patch to head and embroider the nose in blue, using the photos as a guide. Embroider decorative stitching on head using black or dark brown yarn or embroidery thread.

Stuff and sew the legs to either side of the body.

Sew the foot patches to the feet. Embroider decorative stitching on feet using black or dark brown yarn or embroidery thread.

Lightly stuff arms (or don't add stuffing at all - I didn't add stuffing to mine because I didn't have stuffing on hand when I was finishing this project). Sew arms to either side of body.

Create 2 mini knitting needles from the dowel. (Optionally, apply a coat of glue to the mid-sections of the mini knitting needles to make it extra secure.) Wrap pink yarn around the mini knitting needles into a ball shape.

Sew the arms to the ball of yarn with knitting needles, so that the bear appears to be holding them.

And you're done. Enjoy! :)

Gloomy Bear Pattern (Version 2)

Gloomy Bear Crochet Pattern - Version 2

Printer-Friendly PDF

PATTERN NOTES: This is the same pattern as "Gloomy Bear Version 1," except for the bloody claws and the blood that is dripping from the mouth, which only require a few minor revisions.

Many apologies. I chose not to finish version 2 of this bear, so I do not have a photo of the finished "Gloomy Bear Version 2."

However, I did finish the new additions to create Version 2, so here are the pattern additions to add the blood, if you want your Gloomy Bear to look bloody.

You will need the same materials as for Version 1, plus you will also need 1 skein of Lion Brand Vanna's Choice "Scarlet." (And I still recommend "Pink" instead of "Poodle Pink")

Thread yarn through remaining stitches and draw tightly closed.
Hide ends of yarn inside work.

ASSEMBLY:

You may want to Google some images of "Gloomy Bear" for reference when sewing parts into place.

Decide which side of the head you want to be the front and sew the muzzle in place.
Sew the nose to the top of the muzzle.
Sew the eyes in place.
Sew the ears in place.
Stuff arms somewhat lightly but firmly, leaving a small space at the top.
Now insert three of the claws into the arm and sew the arm shut with the claws trapped inside the arm. Be careful to make sure your stitches go through the claws to hold them firmly in place.
Sew the arms to the body (remember to orient which direction you want your Gloomy's claws facing).
Before you sew the legs onto the body, decide whether you want your Gloomy Bear in a sitting pose or a standing pose. Stuff and sew the legs in place accordingly. You may want to add more stuffing before you finish sewing each of them to the body.
Sew tail to bear's body.

And you're done!
Enjoy!

Rika's College Tote Bag Crochet Pattern

(this crochet pattern was inspired by the film “Ju-on”)

Ever seen the movie Ju-on? The American version is known as "The Grudge," but I prefer the original Japanese film by far. The staircase scene is unforgettable!

In the first part of the film, the character Rika sports a tote bag that looks rather handy. I decided to create my own version, following the film's example as closely as possible. Since Rika seems to be a student (at least in the first part of the film), I decided to call it the "college" tote bag and created it to be a size that will fit at least a few useful items like sketchbooks, notepads and binders. I figure this way, it will suit those looking for a functional back to school project. So, here is my interpretation of Rika's college tote bag. I hope you all enjoy this pattern as much as I enjoy a good horror film. ;)

Sitting Kodama Crochet Pattern (REVISED & IMPROVED)

KODAMA A.K.A. TREE SPIRIT CROCHET PATTERN (REVISED & IMPROVED)

PRINTER-FRIENDLY PDF

I was making one of these for my brother's friend and realized that my pattern could be a lot simpler and a lot better. So, here it is: the revised version of the Sitting Kodama crochet pattern.

>Click here for the ORIGINAL Sitting Kodama Tree Spirit pattern<

FINISHED SIZE:
~4 inches tall

MATERIALS:
Lion Brand Vanna's Choice in White and Black
(Any type of yarn will work, of course. Just remember to adjust the hook size accordingly, and that yarn weight will affect the finished size.)
Size G crochet hook
Size F crochet hook (for making the eyes - I used size G and they came out alright, but size F would be preferable to work with)
stuffing
poly-pellets (optional)
yarn needle

NOTES:
- Instead of crocheting the eyes, you may also use pieces of felt, if you choose (or if you simply don't have any black yarn available). Or, if you prefer, use 12mm (or even one 9mm eye and one 12mm eye for that "uneven" look that Kodama have) black safety eyes, place them off off-kilter and/or just omit the mouth altogether.
- I did not add stuffing to the arms or legs.
- Be proud of me, fellow crocheters! I timed myself and found out that this project takes approx. 3 hours of work. I figure that may be useful information for some of you. I don't often record the time it takes to make things.

With black yarn and size F hook, ch 2.
